Most of us know Axolotls eat worms, it is the widely spread recommendation to a healthy and happy 'Lotl. However, unfortunately for Axolotls, their food does not come with the in-depth nutritional labels found on every human-grade food item. The protein, fat, and vitamin content of food given is not common knowledge. We are taking a shot in the dark by just assuming we are supplying a complete Axolotl diet of earthworms.
To determine what we should be feeding, we should first know what requirements we should be meeting. Unfortunately, there isn't much in-depth knowledge of specific nutritional needs of Axolotls, or salamanders for that matter, instead published nutrient requirements of related species are used. The recommended crude protein intake of adult salamanders is 44.4%, based on that of dogs and cats, fish, poultry, and rats. Crude Fat content should be between 10-15%.
Now, what is the nutritional information of the common "Red Wriggler" Earthworm given?
Crude Protein: 10.5% Crude Fat: 2.0% Ash: 0.7% (Ash is the total of all minerals)
Shocking, right? I was surprised too. Let's look at some more food options and their nutritional content:
"Night Crawler" Earthworm
C.P. 60.7% C.F. 4.4% Ash. 11.4%
Rangen brand Salmon Pellets (Soft Moist Diet line)
C.P. 45.0% C.F. 18.0% Ash. <8.0%
Repashy brand "Grub Pie"
C.P. 35.0% C.F. 15.0% Ash. 12.0%
Frozen Bloodworms
C.P. 6.3% C.F. 0.8% Ash. 0.8%
Salmon (Raw)
C.P. 20.0% C.F. 6.0%
We DO NOT recommend feeding live feeder fish or shrimp. Information on where exactly your feeder fish and shrimp came from is not readily available at your local Pet or Fish Store. You could potentially be introducing harmful pathogens and parasites into your Axoltol's environment.
After doing my research on the matter, I am confident to say our Axolotls are fed a well-rounded and nutritious diet. At Onyx Exotics, our 'lotls are fed a diet of Rangen Pellets daily, Night Crawlers every other day, and Repashy Grub Pie as a treat. Juveniles are fed pellets and chopped Night Crawlers daily. Hatchlings are a totally different story, so check our Breeder's Corner for information on Axolotl eggs and rearing.
For malnourished Axolotls, based on the above information, I would recommend a diet of Rangen Pellets, and Raw Salmon.
